RANDALL COUNTY, Texas (KVII) — An Amarillo teenager was indicted for a Father's Day crash in Canyon that killed his 16-year-old friend.
Trent Lee Wood, 19, was indicted by a Randall County grand jury on one count of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle.
According to the criminal complaint, Woods was going 70 mph when his pickup hit a tree near the "2nd Roadside Park" on US 87 and there were no skid marks.
His passenger, 16-year-old Clayton Harold Anderson, was killed in the crash "due to blunt force trauma to numerous portions of his body."
Wood was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
Multiple witnesses told police they saw Woods "consume alcohol at a bar and at a house party after the bar closed," according to the criminal complaint,
Police said his BAC two hours after the crash was .064.
Rodeo Champion
Clayton Anderson was well known in the rodeo community. He won Reserve Champion in Reined Cow Horse two weeks before the crash at the Texas High School Rodeo Association state finals.
He was supposed to compete at nationals in July. The team competed in Anderson's memory.
"Team Texas took the SEVENTH National Win at the NHSRA Finals, and all of our contestants did it in memory of one of our own," said the THSRA.
Anderson was a member of the Region 1 Texas Junior High School Rodeo Association, competing in Steer Saddle Bronc Riding, Calf Roping and Team Roping qualifying for Nationals 2018, 2019 and 2020.
In 2020, he won the Texas Junior High Rodeo Champion Steer Saddle Bronc Riding.
