AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — The man responsible for the death of an Amarillo tow truck driver has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
According to 251st District Court, 23-year-old Jose Hernandez received the sentence Monday morning. Hernandez was accused of striking KC Bryan Cantu of Ricky's Towing with a vehicle as Cantu was making adjustments to a unit he was towing. Hernandez was also found to be intoxicated at the time of the crash. He pleaded guilty to the charge of Intoxication Manslaughter with a Vehicle.
Court officials said family from both sides of the case were in the courtroom and the atmosphere did turn emotional at times.
The crash happened a little more than a year ago, on August 1, 2016.
DPS said Cantu had been driving a 2008 Ford tow truck and was towing a pickup northbound on I-27, about two miles north of Canyon. Cantu had activated the emergency lights on the tow truck, pulled onto the shoulder of the outside lane of I-27, stopped and got out of the tow truck to adjust the pickup being towed.
While Cantu was making adjustments, he and the pickup being towed were struck by a 2008 Dodge Ram pickup being driven by Hernandez. Cantu was pronounced dead on scene.
Hernandez will spend his 10 years behind bars in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
