Man arrested after stealing vehicle and running from police
On May 29th at 9:54 AM, APD officers were called to the 900 block of west Hastings Avenue on a male trying to break into a vehicle. Officers located the male walking along Hastings Avenue, and he immediately ran.
The suspect ran through several yards and jumped several fences to elude officers. The officers saw the male run into an open garage in the 900 block of Hastings. The suspect stole a red Ford truck out of the garage and fled the scene.
Officers pursued the male to a residence in the 2100 block of northwest 2nd Avenue. The suspect ran into the residence and barricaded the door. As more officers were arriving at the scene to set up a perimeter on the house, the suspect came out, got back into the truck, and fled.
Officers pursued the suspect south on Georgia Street to where he exited the vehicle in a parking lot at southwest 15th and Georgia Street and approached and grabbed a female. An undercover officer saw this happen and attempted to contact the male, who then jumped back into the truck and fled onto I-40 westbound.
The driver exited I-40 at the Bell Street exit and turned north on Alice Street. APD SWAT officers were in the area and were able to contain the driver in the vehicle at the stop sign of Alice Street and Plains Boulevard.
The suspect was taken into custody and booked at the Potter County Detention Center for Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, Criminal Mischief, Evading Arrest, Evading Arrest in Motor Vehicle, Criminal Trespass of a Habitation, and Failure to Identify. The suspect gave the name of Jose Sanchez, 51-year-old male, but had not been positively identified at the time of booking.
