At 9:30 p.m., on August 21, 2010, officers were dispatched to 2426 N. Redwood on a report of a child being shot.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a 22-month old female suffering from a gunshot wound to her head. It was determined that a loaded handgun was found inside of a drawer in a closet by another child. This child began to play with the handgun and shot the victim a single time, not being aware that the gun was loaded.
The victim was taken to a local hospital where she died on August 21, 2010.
Adults were present during this incident, but had been outside.
No charges were filed in this homicide, as the child involved in the shooting was criminally not responsible due to their age.
This case was presented to the Potter County DA and the Potter County Attorney’s office, for making a gun available to a minor; however, due to the case facts charges were not accepted.
