AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — Amarillo police have arrested a man in connection to a Thursday afternoon homicide in Northeast Amarillo.

Police said the suspect, 46-year-old Robert Harold Howerter, is the victim's son.

Officers were called to the home at 3804 Mesa Verde around 3:45 p.m. on a report of a person who had been shot. When medical personnel arrived, APD said the victim, 69-year-old Ricky Lee Howerter, was dead at the scene.

APD's Special Crimes unit was called to start an investigation into the death and as the investigation progressed, officers determined the victim's son was the suspect. He was arrested by the Armstrong County Sheriff's Office for an unrelated offense he had committed in Claude after his father's murder.

According to police, a warrant for Murder was obtained in Potter County for Robert. He was served while in the Armstrong County Jail.

Residents in the neighborhood were shocked by the incident.

One neighbor, John Henry Westmoreland, said, "I just talked to him about a week ago and I don’t know what happened. My friend is gone. It’s pretty scary. I’m going to be up all night trying to figure out what happened to my buddy."

Initially, Amarillo police described the incident as "a person found deceased inside a home." However, Friday morning they did confirm the incident was a fatal shooting.
