Sheriff's deputies were called to Wapiti Lane on an assault and suicide attempt.

Spurgeon, 72, was found unconscious, suffering from head injuries. Jacob Howe, 22, was arrested on charges of aggravated assault against a family member and injury to an elderly person.

Howe had attempted to take his own life when his mother and Spurgeon intervened and stopped him. Howe then allegedly beat Spurgeon with his hands and feet. Spurgeon died two days later.
