Potter-Randall Special Crimes Unit detectives are investigating a man's death after an assault this month on East Amarillo Boulevard.
At 8:34 p.m. Oct. 16, police responded to an assault call at 3001 E. Amarillo Blvd.
Officers found Michael Todd Williams, 47, lying in a parking lot.
Williams was unresponsive and transported by ambulance to a local hospital.
On Oct. 21, Williams was released from the hospital.
He returned to the hospital Oct. 25 and died on Sunday morning.
Justice of the Peace Thomas Jones ordered an autopsy to be performed in Lubbock, and Special Crimes detectives began their investigation at that time, police said.
"To keep from jeopardizing the investigation, details of this case were withheld until now," an APD news release said.
Preliminary autopsy results show Williams died from pneumonia as a complication of blunt force trauma to the upper body, police said.
Williams pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the February 1989 beating death of 24-year-old Bounpasom Louanglath, of Amarillo, who was found dead on a couch at 1010 N. Marrs St., Texas Department of Public Safety records and Globe-News files show.
Williams was originally charged with murder in Louanglath's death, which authorities said stemmed from a dispute between Louanglath and one or more people at a party.
The incident marked Amarillo's first homicide of that year.
No arrests have been made in Williams' death.
