OSBI Asks Help in Slayings
Dec. 23, 1983, 12:00 a.m. CT
Authorities are appealing to the public in an effort to solve the slayings of two girls they think were hitchhiking across Oklahoma to their Albuquerque, N.M., home.
Angela Haragar, 17, and Ophelia K. Bernal, 18, were last seen near I-40 and Council Road in Oklahoma City on Dec. 8, said Paul Renfrow, spokesman for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
Their bodies were found a day later just east of Amarillo, Texas.
The girls had been "brutally beaten to death," said Carson (Texas) County Sheriff Connie Reed. "It was a gangland, brutal-type death."
Both the girls lived in Albuquerque and had visited relatives in Ponca City, Red Rock and Oklahoma City, Renfrow said.
Texas lawmen are trying to find someone who saw the girls or gave them a ride.
Authorities gave these descriptions of the girls. Both were Indians and both carried duffle bags: Miss Haragar was about 5-foot-2 and weighed about 140 pounds. She was wearing a black jacket, blue jeans with white pinstripes and blue-and-white tennis shoes.
Miss Bernal was about 5-foot-6 and weighed 140 pounds. She was wearing blue jeans, a purple blouse and white, knee-high, buckskin moccasins.
Anyone with information about the girls may call the OSBI in Oklahoma City at 405-427-5421 or toll-free at 1-800-522-8523, Renfrow said. BIOG: NAME:
