AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — One person is in the hospital and other behind bars after an early Wednesday morning wreck in South Amarillo.

According to Amarillo police, officers were sent to the wreck at 34th Avenue and Bell Street just before 1 a.m. on Wednesday. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a silver 2007 Toyota 4-runner had been westbound on S.W. 34th Ave. when the driver ran the red light.

Police said when the driver of the 4-runner ran the red light, his vehicle collided head-on with a 2011 black Chevrolet Equinox. The driver of the 4-runner was identified as 25-year-old Michael Raymond Tamayo.

The driver of the Equinox, a 59-year-old man, had to be extricated from the vehicle and the 35-year-old passenger of that vehicle received minor injuries. The driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

APD said alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the crash.

Police said officers arrested Tamayo and he was booked into the Randall County Jail on a charge of Intoxicated Assault with a Vehicle Causing Serious Bodily Injury.
