On April 28, 2006, Officer Kevin Brown stopped Gary Jack Hella, 19, at 2515 South Grand because Hella fit the description of a suspect in an Auto Burglary.
Hella pulled a 9mm semi-automatic from his pants while Officer Brown patted him down for weapons and obtained Hella’s identification. Hella fired one round at Officer Brown, striking him in the left wrist.
Hella fled from the scene and hid in a nearby shed. The SWAT team was notified and after searching the area, they located Hella inside the shed, and took him into custody.
Hella was charged with Attempted Capital Murder of a Peace Officer, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Possession of Narcotics.
On October 30, 2006, Hella pled guilty to the Attempted Capital Murder of a Peace Officer. A jury sentenced him to 35 years in TDC in addition to 12 years for a Probation Violation. Officer Brown recovered from his injuries and returned to duty.
