AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - The name of the victim who was fatally shot this morning has been released.
Officials say the victim has been identified as 26-year-old Alicia Rashawn Burks.
The Amarillo Police Department said the shooting happened around 9:44 this morning in the 1600 block of South Hughes.
Police say neighbors in the area heard gunshots and called the police. Officers then found a 26-year-old female dead inside a home.
The suspect, who police describe as a five-foot-seven black male, is believed to have fled the scene on foot.
Bivins Elementary School was placed on lock-out mode as a precautionary measure.
Police believe the suspect is armed and say he was last seen wearing a red cloth on his head, a white t-shirt and tan pants.
Police are investigating this incident as a homicide.

A 26-year-old woman was killed in a central Amarillo shooting and a suspect was still at large and possibly armed Friday night, according to the Amarillo Police Department.
The department’s Special Crimes Unit is investigating the shooting as a homicide after Alicia Rashawn Burks, 26, was found dead Friday morning in a home in the 1600 block of South Hughes Street, according to APD.
Police said a black male was seen leaving the area after people nearby reported hearing gunshots. Officers were first sent to South Hughes Street at 9:44 a.m.
Police described the man seen leaving the scene as 5-foot-7 and 165 pounds wearing a red cloth on his head, a white shirt and tan pants. He was thought to be in possession of a firearm.
Special Crimes continued its investigation into the homicide Friday night.

The Amarillo Police Department has opened 14 homicide investigations this year.
The department worked 19 homicides last year, according to a police spokesman.
According to APD’s annual reports, the department investigated nine homicides per year from 2009 through 2015, reaching a high of 10 for five straight years from 2009 to 2013.
