One man is in jail and another in life-threatening condition Sunday after an early-morning assault involving a vehicle in south Amarillo, police said.
Shortly after 1 a.m., officers responded to a call involving a vehicle and a pedestrian in the 2400 block of South Crockett Street, and found Hector Alejandro Gonzalez, 22, had been hit by a vehicle that fled the area, police said.
Officers later found Collin Lee Johnson, 19, of Amarillo driving a Toyota FJ Cruiser in the 5900 block of Shawnee Trail and arrested Johnson on failure to stop and render aid and intoxicated assault charges, police said.
Police said they received information Gonzalez and Johnson were part of two different groups that went to Stephen F. Austin Park, 2400 S. Crockett St., to fight, and are investigating the incident as an assault because Johnson may have hit Gonzalez with the FJ Cruiser as part of the fight.
Gonzalez was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.
Crockett was booked into the Potter County Detention Center on Sunday on two third-degree felony charges but bond has not been set, jail officials said.
Police said alcohol was a factor in the incident and the incident is under investigation.
