AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — UPDATE: 3:03 p.m.

The Amarillo Police Department has released more information on the shooting Tuesday afternoon on 6th Avenue.

According to police officials, at 12:18 p.m., the Amarillo Emergency Communications Center received a third-party call regarding a person making suicidal threats but the person's location was unknown.

Members of APD's Crisis Intervention Team were dispatched to investigate. CIT members are trained to handle calls involving people suffering from a mental health crisis. Each team member is teamed with a mental health counselor from Texas Panhandle Centers.

Just after 1 p.m., officers found a man inside a business at 3808 southwest 6th Ave. As police entered the building, they encountered the man armed with a gun.

One of the officers fired a shot at the man to protect themself and others present in the building, APD officials said.

The man was taken to the hospital with potentially deadly injuries.

A second person left the area with injuries but isn't thought to be in mortal danger.

APD's Homicide Unit investigates all shootings involving officers.

The Amarillo Police Department said officers are on the scene of a shooting on 6th Avenue.

Police said the shooting was in the 3800 block of 6th and two people have been taken to the hospital.

No further information has been released pending further investigation.
