One man was hospitalized Monday night after being shot in a robbery attempt in east Amarillo.

Police are searching for the man who shot Timothy Dominguez, 27, of Amarillo, about 10 p.m. outside the Taco Villa at 3500 E. Interstate 40.

Dominguez and a female passenger were sitting in his car when a purple Dodge Neon pulled in beside them, a police news release said.

A man stepped out of the Neon and demanded money, the release said.

Dominguez stepped out of his car and was shot in the back, witnesses told police. The alleged assailant returned to the Neon and fled, police said. Nothing was taken during the robbery, police said.

A passenger took the victim to a nearby home, but then called 911 and returned Dominguez to the scene, the news release said. An ambulance transported Dominguez to the hospital. Police said injuries Dominguez suffered were not life threatening. It was unclear Tuesday whether Dominguez remained in the hospital.

The suspect is described as a white or Hispanic male, 5-foot-10  to 6 feet tall, 180 to 200 pounds, wearing a black leather jacket and black stocking cap.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 806-374-4400.
