A man was sentenced to 25 years in prison Thursday after he shot his ex-girlfriend, according to a news release from 47th District Attorney Randall Sims.

Marcellus Ywain “Speedy” Adams, 47, was convicted of aggravated assault on a family member with a deadly weapon — a first-degree felony — in 181st District Court.

On April 7, Adams shot his ex-girlfriend with a .45 caliber handgun while she was in the driver’s seat of her SUV. She was getting ready to drive away from Adams’ residence on the corner of Southwest Fifth Avenue and South Florida Street in the San Jacinto neighborhood.

“The bullet shattered a bone in her arm, transected the radial nerve in her arm, exited the arm and penetrated her abdomen, damaging her intestines, gallbladder and liver,” the news release said. Emergency surgery saved her life.

Adams has seven previous misdemeanor convictions, including deadly conduct, unlawful carrying of a weapon, DWI, possession of marijuana, failure to identify and two domestic violence convictions, the release said.

Adams claimed self-defense but the jury rejected his testimony.
