On November 27th at 12:39 AM, the Amarillo Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call from a male who was speaking Spanish. The male quit talking before a Spanish speaking call taker could get on the line or an address could be obtained, but the call taker could tell that the male was in distress. The cell phone call was traced to the area of the 400 block of southeast 15th Avenue.
Emergency personnel responded and located the correct address to be in the 1400 block of south Pierce street. The back door was open and officers located Gonzalo Zubia, 34-year-old male, deceased in a back room. Zubia died of a gunshot wound.
The Amarillo Police Department Homicide Unit is investigating. Anyone with information that could help in this case is asked to call the APD Homicide Unit at 378-9468 or Amarillo Crime Stoppers at 374-4400. Tips can also be given anonymously online at www.amapolice.org or on the Amarillo Crime Stoppers P3 mobile app.
With the details in the release of the homicide incident today, and with so many people using cell phones and not landlines, the Amarillo Police Department would like to stress the importance of giving your address as soon as you can during an emergency phone call. Emergency calls on cell phones can often be tracked to a location close to where they are being made and in some instances the exact address, but they are not always accurate. One of the first pieces of information you should give to the emergency call taker is your address. This will allow them to get emergency responders started towards your emergency without delay.
