AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — A 28-year-old Amarillo man has died after being struck by another vehicle on I-27 Monday night.

According to Texas DPS, 28-year-old KC Cantu lost his life after being hit by a drunk driver while he was making adjustments to a unit he was towing.

DPS said Cantu had been driving a 2008 Ford tow truck and was towing a pickup northbound on I-27, about two miles north of Canyon, around 11:25 p.m. on Monday. Cantu had activated the emergency lights on the tow truck, pulled onto the shoulder of the outside lane of I-27, stopped and got out of the tow truck to adjust the pickup being towed.

While Cantu was making adjustments, he and the pickup being towed were struck by a 2008 Dodge Ram pickup being driven by 22-year-old Jose Hernandez. Cantu was pronounced dead on scene.

DPS said investigators determined that Hernandez had been drinking. He was arrested and booked into the Randall County jail on a charge of Intoxication Manslaughter.

According to DPS, I-27 northbound was closed for about five hours. Traffic was diverted to the service road south of the scene of the crash.
