An early-morning fire at a vacant apartment in downtown Amarillo was ruled intentional and caused $40,000 in damage, the Amarillo Fire Department said.
Investigators think a warming fire started the blaze at 813 S.W. Eighth Ave., where firefighters were sent at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday.
The vacant two-story apartment had flames showing on the outside rear of the building, AFD said. The flames extended up toward the roof, lighting a balcony on fire.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control 20 minutes after arriving, a news release said. The Amarillo Fire Marshal’s Office ruled the fire as intentional, and the fire was still under investigation Tuesday, AFD said.
The property has an appraised value of $23,000, Potter-Randall Appraisal District records show.
