AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — The Amarillo Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting.

It happened at about 7 a.m. Sunday in the area of SW 34th Ave. and Hawthorne Drive.

Officers were called because a man was standing outside shooting a gun. He hit at least one residence.

As officers approached, police said John Todd Bigham, 53, continued firing the gun.

Police returned fire.

Bigham was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

No officers were hurt.

APD's Homicide Unit is investigating the shooting.

On July 17th just after 7:00 AM, APD officers were called to the 3200 block of Hawthorne on a male standing outside shooting a gun and hitting at least one other residence. As officers approached, the male continued to shoot in their direction. The officers fired shots, striking the suspect. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he later died. No officers were injured. The investigation is ongoing by the Amarillo Police Department Homicide Unit. APD officers and detectives will be canvassing the immediate area looking for any other damage from the suspect shooting.
