On November 25, 2019, Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers conducted surveillance at the residence of Christopher Ryan Patterson, located at 1401 N. Hughes Street, Amarillo, Texas. DPS Officer Ben Dollar observed Patterson arrive at the residence in a passenger vehicle. Patterson went into the residence for a short amount of time. Patterson exited the residence with a black backpack and conducted a brief money transaction with a black male in front of the residence. Patterson then re-entered the vehicle and the vehicle left the residence.
The vehicle traveled to the My Thai restaurant, located at 2029 Coulter Street. DPS Officers Dollar and Styles approached the vehicle and identified themselves as Texas State Police Officers. During the encounter, Officer Styles smelled a strong odor of marihuana coming from the vehicle. Patterson advised Officer Dollar that there was marihuana inside the backpack in the vehicle.
- The officers removed Patterson and the driver from the vehicle. Officers then conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle. During the search, officers located 221 grams of suspected Xanax pills and 6.3 ounces of marihuana.
- Officer Dollar asked Patterson what Patterson did for a living. Patterson stated that he "sold weed and Xanax bars." Officer Dollar then read Patterson his Miranda warnings. Patterson waived his rights and agreed to make a statement. Patterson admitted to carrying his backpack at all times. Patterson admitted that there
