Woman's Death Ruled Homicide; 3rd in 48 hours
Police on Tuesday said the death of a 52-year-old woman found in her home early Friday morning has been ruled a homicide; the third in a 48-hour period.
The husband of Ofelia Lopez reported she was unconscious about 1:20 in her home at 1111 N. Taylor St., police said.
When paramedics arrived, they attempted CPR, but it failed, authorities said.
The initial investigation showed no signs of foul play, and it was suspected that Lopez died of a medical condition.
An autopsy was begun at an Amarillo mortuary but the doctor conducting the autopsy found injuries to Lopez's neck and head.
The doctor stopped the autopsy and transferred Lopez's body to Lubbock for a criminal autopsy.
Results of an autopsy conducted Monday revealed Lopez died of a gunshot wound, police said. Investigators are withholding the location of the wound pending the investigation. Police would release no further information in the case Tuesday.

Two other homicides over the weekend are being investigated by Special Crimes.
Rodney Lane Dunlap, 60, was arrested at 8409 Bluebonnet Drive after he called 911 about 7:50 p.m. Saturday to report a shooting at his residence. Responding deputies found his son, 33-year-old it Joshua Lane Dunlap, inside a travel trailer dead of at least one apparent gunshot wound to his upper torso from a small-caliber handgun, which later was recovered. Dunlap was charged with murder.
Gabriel Olmos-Serna, is charged with murder in the shooting death of his brother, Guadalpe Olmos, 29, who died about 1:45 a.m. Saturday at Northwest Texas Hospital.
The shooting occurred at 11:40 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of DeBruce Grain, 620 N. Marrs St., where detectives recovered a shell casing.
They are seeking a medium-caliber handgun believed to be the which weapon used in the homicide.
Olmos-Serna and Dunlap remain in the Potter County Detention Center in lieu of $1 million bond each.
The homicides were the 16th, 17th and 18th of the year investigated by Special Crimes. The number includes two fatal officer-involved shootings.
