Prosecutors charged an Amarillo man and woman with murder in the shooting death of a 39-year-old man at an Amarillo apartment complex, authorities said Friday.
Officers on Thursday obtained and served arrest warrants for Dustin Ryan Rhoades, 27, and CreeAnna Shamell Dawn, 23, said Lt. Erick Bohannon, Potter-Randall Special Crimes Unit coordinator.
Further investigation led police to think Rhoades and Dawn were involved in the June 8 shooting death of Deans Anderson at an Amarillo apartment, he said. He would not elaborate.
Dawn already was in the Potter County jail on an unrelated prostitution charge, jail records show. Officers stopped Rhoades near East 22nd Avenue and South Arthur Street, Bohannon said.
Both remained in the Potter County jail Friday, in lieu of a $1-million bond each, jail officials said.
Dawn admitted to involvement in the slaying, according to a criminal complaint. Investigators showed her a photo lineup and she identified Rhoades, court records said.
Just before midnight June 8, officers found Anderson, formerly of Shelby, Miss., dead near the doorway of his rented apartment at The Westminster Apartments, 2415 S. Coulter St., authorities said. He died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to a preliminary autopsy.
Minutes before, several residents had said they heard a loud pop, and a witness saw a white man and a black woman speed away north on Coulter Street, police said.
A neighbor said Friday Anderson had a girlfriend who usually would stay over during the weekends, when he was off.
The two got into an argument after she brought her son over to his apartment nearly a week after they had been dating, the neighbor said.
Bohannon would not disclose how Rhoades and Dawn knew Anderson, who shot him, what type of weapon was used or any other details of the investigation.
Bohannon said investigators are still trying to determine a motive in the killing.
If convicted of the first-degree felony, Rhoades and Dawn could face five to 99 years or life in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
Rhoades served about four years in prison after he was convicted of burglary of a habitation and failure to stop and render aid in 2007, state records show. Rhoades finished his parole term in February, records show.
