Prosecutors said Kati's mother, Kristina Earnest, and Castro arrived at the Wilbarger General Hospital emergency room about 11:40 p.m. July 4, 2009, with Kati's body. The two were dating and lived at an apartment complex in Vernon with Kati and Earnest's 18-month-old son.

Castro initially told nurses that Kati had drowned and said her "extensive bruises" occurred when she was beaten by children at a Vernon park, the district attorney's office said.
