One person is dead after Monday night's SWAT standoff at an RV park in east Amarillo. The incident started about 8:40 p. m. Monday, April 1, at Overnite RV Park, 900 S. Lakeside, when officers were responding to a burglary, according to an Amarillo Police Department news release. According to the APD release: The man who called police told officers that he found an unknown man standing inside his RV and holding a gun.

According to the Amarillo Police Department, the incident started 8:42 p.m., when officers were responding to a burglary (ABC 7 Amarillo-Maria Serrano).
AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — One person is dead after Monday night's SWAT standoff at an RV park in east Amarillo.
The incident started about 8:40 p.m. Monday, April 1, at Overnite RV Park, 900 S. Lakeside, when officers were responding to a burglary, according to an Amarillo Police Department news release.
According to the APD release:

The man who called police told officers that he found an unknown man standing inside his RV and holding a gun.

The caller, who also was armed, was able to disarm the intruder as he went into another room in the RV where firearms were stored.

The caller then left the RV and called police.

When officers arrived on the scene, they heard a commotion from inside of the RV, and saw a man armed with a gun.

The man refused to put down the gun and leave the RV.

The suspect then came to the door, and pointed the gun at officers.

An APD officer fired at the man, who then went back inside the RV and out of view.

The suspect then began firing rounds at officers from inside of the RV.

At 9:09 p.m., the APD Critical Incident Response Team, was called to assist.

Police said the suspect continued to fire the weapon from inside of the RV while response team officers and negotiators arrived.

A chemical irritant was fired into the trailer in an attempt to force the suspect from the RV.

At 9:48 p.m., officers observed the suspect lighting a fire inside of the RV. The RV became fully engulfed in flames.

While the fire burned, officers could hear multiple rounds of ammunition going off.

At 10:11 p.m., the Amarillo Fire Department was able to put the fire out and the suspect was found dead inside of the RV.
The suspect had not been identified early Tuesday morning, April 2, and Justice of the Peace Gary Jackson ordered an autopsy. No officers were injured during the standoff.
The Amarillo Police Department Special Crimes Unit and the Texas Rangers are investigating the incident, according to the police report.
As with all officer involved shootings, Amarillo Police said the officer involved will be placed on administrative leave is the department's policy.
