Marcos Portillo was in the Potter County Detention Center on the charge of Murder with two victims. At 10:46 p.m. on 6-25-08, a correction officer looked into the single cell where Portillo was housed alone. Portillo was observed hanging by his neck from a self-made ligature made out of pieces from a torn bedsheet. Portillo had attached one end of the ligature to a light fixture mounted to the ceiling and tied the other end around his neck. Correction officers entered the cell, used an automated external defibrillator and CPR techniques to attempt to revive Portillo.
