AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — An abandoned building near downtown Amarillo was ruled a complete loss after catching fire on Sunday morning.
According to the Amarillo Fire Department, at about 9 a.m., crews were dispatched to a reported fire at 410 SW 10th Avenue. Units arrived to find heavy smoke coming from a boarded up, abandoned building.
The building on fire was connected to another building and both units to a two-story apartment complex.
Firefighters saw that the west wall of the structure had partially collapsed and heavy fire conditions were visible inside. Because of the collapse, firefighters fought the blaze defensively, from the outside of the structure, protecting the adjoining buildings.
A second-alarm was called and firefighters remained on scene into the afternoon. However, the fire was called under control at about 9:45 a.m. but AFD units stayed on scene until about 3:30 p.m. to monitor the building.
The building was considered a total loss due to fire damage and structural collapse. No damage was sustained to either of the adjoining units.
No injuries were sustained and no one was inside at the time of the fire.
The Amarillo Fire Marshall's Office was called and determined the cause of the fire as 'undetermined.' Damages are estimated at $30,000.
