On July 20, 2007 Alberta Byars, 88, was found inside of her home at 2011 N. Mirror viciously beaten around her face and upper chest.

A joint investigation was begun using Detectives from the Crimes Against Persons Squad, CSI and Special Crimes Unit. It was determined that a unknown person had broken into Ms. Byars’ home, assaulted her, and then stole dolls from inside of her home.

Within a short period of time the investigation led to a trailer house located across the alley from Ms. Byars’. A search warrant was obtained for two different properties adjacent to each other. Items taken from Ms. Byars’ home were recovered as well as clothing worn by the suspect and other items.

Charles Hess, 44, was detained on the day this occurred and has since been charged with Burglary with Intent to Commit Aggravated Assault in Potter County.

Alberta Byars remained under medical care after this assault and died on October 8, 2007.
